Hair Loss
Hair loss can be distressing and in many cases there are hormonal reasons for this. At Pasadena Pellet, we can help with hormonal and other treatments.
Causes of Hair Loss
Hair loss can be due to many causes. Some hair loss is normal and part of life, but excessive hair loss might have a medical cause.
Below are some conditions that can lead to excessive hair loss:
- Menopause and peri-menopause
- Excessive male hormones
- Hormone imbalances, fluctuations, or rapid decrease
- Thyroid disorders
- Side effect of medications
- Exposure to toxins through direct contact with hair or scalp or ingested
- Lifestyle issues - stress, alcohol, major illness, dietary (rapid weight loss, restricted eating), vitamin or other nutrient deficiencies
- Medical treatments - chemotherapy, radiation therapy, estrogen blockers (Tamoxifen, Aromatase Inhibitors), estrogen suppression (Lupron, Depo-Provera, Nexplanon).
A thorough history and exam is required, as well as a panel of hormone and other blood tests.
Treatment of Hair Loss
Normally, treatment is reserved until a thorough investigation of possible causes has been conducted. The best treatment is to find the cause of the problem and then remove it or fix it. Some treatments can be attempted when the cause is unable to be determined.
Treatments available at Pasadena Pellet include anti-androgen medication and non-surgical hair growth products.
Anti-androgen treatments include:
- spironolactone
- finasteride
- other androgen-blocking medications
- female hormone therapy - if warranted
Hair growth products include:
- prescription minoxidil - e.g. topical Rogaine

- other vitamin and mineral supplements
